Year End Close Out Sale. Everything Must Go.

posted by
Michael Glenn (51)

Football season is almost over, and winter is on the way. Cold, runny noses, shorter days, and a time when everyone is looking forward to the Holidays, but during this time of the year, I really like it!

When the alarm goes off Monday morning, I'm a happy camper. I pop into the office with a big toothy grin, folks stare blankly as I saunter over to the coffee pot (Hey, it's free) and give everyone a wink and a nod.

Remember all those old reqs where the manager likes to interview a thousand candidates before making a decision. Or what about the hiring manager that is so busy? By the time he/she gets around to reviewing the resumes, the candidates have gotten jobs.

However, this time of the year it’s good to be a recruiter. Hiring Managers are looking to fill their positions before the year ends.

The same thing happens with retail each year. The prices are lowered to get the items sold and ready for new items next year. Consumers rush into the malls for bargain sales. You wind up buying that tacky sweater for Uncle Fred on Christmas.

The same with recruiting. It's the year end close out sale.

Folks fear that they will lose headcount for next year, if they don't hire someone this year. What a great motivator too! When you tell a hiring manager, their position will be canceled next year, suddenly they are ready to hire anyone off the street.

True. Football season is almost over. It’s getting colder, but this time of the year is just fine by me. Hiring managers are beating down my door to get candidates scheduled for interviews. I get to fill that impossible job that required a candidate to wear a cape and leap tall buildings in a single bound with someone that is…qualified.

Layoffs are good?

posted by
Michael Glenn (51)

I bumped into a friend of mine, a fellow recruiter that got laid off. He looked great. 10 years younger and chipper as I had ever seen him before. I asked him he why he was in such great spirits, he got let go from a good job, has two kids, a stay home wife and a mortgage. Why is he acting like he won the lottery?

He wasn't expecting to be let go. It just happened. A life changing moment he explained. The economy sucked, companies were downsizing, and given a two month severance, my friend didn't panic. He had been networking, meeting other recruiters, and hobnobbing with hiring managers. Things were ok. He landed a contract gig for the year.

We are all guilty of this. You update your resume and say, it looks good, then save it on your computer and pull it out when something goes wrong. Trust me. In this economy, you need to do a better job of marketing yourself. It helps your career to network often and it's just good overall. It’s like exercise.

If layoffs do occur, it's a good thing. You are forced to meet other people. Instead of having mental arguments with former co-workers, get out there and mingle. You will find that you are not alone.

I host a networking event every two months for IT professionals. I've dubbed it the 'Glennlist '. It's my way of helping out others but I also invite a lot of recruiters too. You never know. Things happen and today can be the day you need to network.

Job postings on Linkup.com

posted by
Michael Glenn (51)

If your company spends a lot of money on job postings, you need to know about the affordable alternatives. Just check out linkup.com. I typed in Web Developer and Atlanta into the site. It pulled up all the major companies in Atlanta that had Web Developers listed on their corporate career websites.

What does this mean? It means I want to drive traffic to this site because it's ridiculously cheap compared to major job boards. And, it also means you want to incorporate RSS feeds into your job postings too.

This is great news! It feels like COB Friday when I see websites like www.linkup.com.

Military Recruiting

posted by
Michael Glenn (51)

A Grenade bounced off his chest and he chose to save his fellow Troops. His name was Michael Mansoor and he was a Navy SEAL. He threw his body over the grenade and died,.  It was the ultimate sacrifice.

Google Michael Mansoor. Imagine if you can hire someone with that kind of character.

It makes me wonder how many of these men and women are coming back without a job after serving our country. Some of my best hires were folks that had a military background. They seemed to make sound decisions and stand by them.

Take an opportunity to visit www.militarystars.com  I don’t know much about Military Stars, except they host Career Fairs for the military. The next one is Atlanta on April 10th.

Casual Game Recruiting

posted by
Michael Glenn (51)

If you have not discovered “Casual Games” on the internet, let me bring you up to speed Turok. We use wheels to move us around, you don’t have to hunt for food anymore, and there is thing called a computer. What is a casual game? Think back when you played Tetris or even Solitaire, those were some of the first games. Today, there is a multitude of casual games. It’s on every major portal. Google, MTV, Turner Broadcasting Sytem, Microsoft have launched casual games. Why? Because there is advertising and subscription based accounts, and it is a billion dollar industry. Enough said.

According to the Casual Games Association, 100 employees is the median size of a casual game division. 1100 is the number of companies with active strategies to address the casual game market. And, 77,000 is the average game developer salary in Pacific Northwest. What does this have to do with recruiting? We may be in a recession, but this sector is hot. The whole dot com recruiting craze left everyone with a hangover. This is the newest recruiting craze and the party has just begun. The casual game market is expected to have huge growth in the coming years. Throw in the cool iPhone that will download games and the Xbox looking to partner casual game distributors. If you want to learn more into recruiting into this hot market, ping me. I will be glad to share my ideas.
